The only thing I can think of is, like John said, redo the animation with the brush inserted. This is fairly easy to do using something like Brilliance/DPaint etc. The only other thing I can think of is using a switcher and doing a partial wipe to reveal the brush from another source (like a 3rd amiga, or videotape etc.) You could key in the brush as well, but you'd have to go through pretty much the same thing as inserting the brush into the anim.
I'll play with Scala this afternoon and see if anything else comes to mind.
